Gentleness is a compassionate presence, a patient response, a controlled strength, and thoughtful communications with careful and considerate actions.
Gentleness incorporates:
Compassion
Intentional Communication
Mindfulness
Self-Awareness
Physical control and restraint1
Gentleness is not weakness, rather it is strength under control. Gentleness requires humility as we choose to extend grace with restraint, instead of harshness. Gentleness chooses compassion over criticism. It chooses to build up, not tear down.
“The fruit of the Spirit is…gentleness…” ~Galatians 5:22-23 WEB
When we walk in gentleness, we reflect God’s heart. Gentleness is love and grace in action. Gentleness communicates value and dignity to the person on the receiving end. It invites restoration, promotes peace, and nurtures growth.
Gentleness reflects the heart of Jesus, who described Himself as “gentle and humble of heart.”
“Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavily burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and humble in heart; and you will find rest for your souls. For My yoke is easy, and My burden is light.” ~Matthew 11:28-30 WEB
Prayer
Lord, Your gentleness invites us to trust You with all of our hearts, and in You, we find rest for our souls. We invite You, O Lord, to harness our strength so that it is controlled by Your Holy Spirit, resulting in a gentleness that soothes the hearts of those we communicate with and interact with daily.
